WALKAIDE
In keeping with Bay Orthopedics tradition of researching and implementing the latest technology, we now offer the WalkAide™ Functional Electrical Stimulation Device.
The WalkAide™ is a battery-operated, portable electrical stimulator, which activates the muscles needed to lift the foot. Conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis, Stroke, Cerebral Palsy, incomplete spinal cord injuries and others are treatable with a WalkAide™. Approximately the size of a pack of cigarettes and utilizing one AA battery, the WalkAide™ is a light weight, compact unit which attaches to the upper calf via a plastic cuff. There are no exposed wires and nothing needs to be attached to or placed into your shoe. The WalkAide™ is considered a myo-orthotic, a new category of Orthotic devices. Myo-Orthotics are devices which act upon the patient's own musculature, allowing the muscles to function as they were designed. By utilizing gel based electrodes (similar to those used by Physical Therapists) against the skin, the WalkAide™ emits an electrical stimulus which is picked up by the nerve controlling muscle activity. The electrical stimulus travels to the brain which sends an impulse to contract the muscle and lift the foot. Known benefits of this technology are many; some benefits have yet to be realized. In addition to the functional benefits such as a smoother gait pattern, greater endurance and strength and decreased energy expenditure, patients realize an increase in circulation to the extremity and a return of sensory feelings to the limb.
